MONTPELIER, Vt.—A sticky debate is swirling around this state.
As production of maple syrup soars, the industry's big trade group is pushing a dozen states and four Canadian provinces that make up the North American maple belt to adopt one uniform grading standard. The International Maple Syrup Institute thinks the booming commodity can be better marketed world-wide without confusing consumers.
But while many maple-producers are eager to spread the idea, scores of others are waffling over going to one international standard, fearing a loss of their quirky, homespun image.

Last week’s New York State Maple Tour wound its way across northern Sullivan and western Ulster counties as 132 registrants got a first-hand glimpse into what our local maple syrup producers are doing to get better.

Two busloads of suppliers, producers, researchers and retailers enjoyed what they saw as they spent last Monday and Tuesday learning about the local maple industry.

Hard work makes for sweet returns for local 'sugar house'

And John Garigliano, who is only in his third season of production, is quickly becoming a veteran maple syrup producer during one of the best “runs” in recent history. “All the old timers are telling me they have never seen the sap run like this,” John, who owns Catskill Mountain Sugar House in Grahamsville, said.

Sullivan County Democrat, March 4, 2011 SULLIVAN COUNTY — The sap is running and the weather is beautiful! Come out Saturday, March 19, 2011, and take a sugarhouse tour here in Sullivan County! A sugarhouse, for the uninitiated, is where the sap of the maple trees is collected and boiled down to that delicious nectar of the gods, maple syrup. Five sugarhouse operators here in Sullivan County have joined Community Unity and the Upper Delaware Chapter of Slow Foods International to offer an afternoon of tours and fun, all for a good cause.
